Surfing, Ocean Science & Professional Development. A specialist international institute being developed in the Mentawai Islands.
The Mentawai Surf Institute is conceived as a full-time, multidisciplinary educational facility for aspiring and professional surfers, coaches, entrepreneurs and people pursuing careers in the surf industry. Its ambition is to connect time in the water with the knowledge to contribute to the wider sport.
The proposed curriculum combines high-performance training with surf science, ocean safety, business, board design and marine stewardship. Professional certification pathways and research opportunities are part of the vision, with course structures and accreditation arrangements still to be developed.
MSI’s proposed home is Siberut, within the wider Mentawai Bay strategy. Local career development and emerging Indonesian surfing talent are central to the institute’s purpose. The strategy also envisages cultural exchange and opportunities to learn with Mentawai communities.
Delivery will require appropriate educational, coaching, safety and research partnerships. The strategy identifies international collaboration as an ambition; no organisation is presented here as a confirmed partner or accreditor.
