Creating opportunities for Mentawai youth and emerging Indonesian surfers is central to the MSI vision.
The strategy proposes training and scholarship pathways for Mentawai youth, supporting ambitions to become professional surfers, instructors and surf entrepreneurs. Scholarship criteria, funding, places and application dates are not yet confirmed.
The proposed educational approach includes surf hospitality, event management, retail, marketing, board shaping and responsible tourism. It is designed to broaden the possible routes into the surf industry rather than focus exclusively on competition.
Locally owned board-shaping businesses, surf schools and eco-lodges are identified in the strategy as part of the wider opportunity. MSI’s proposed business education can help connect practical surf knowledge with entrepreneurial skills.
The strategy envisages international students learning with Mentawai communities and creating opportunities for cultural exchange. The form of that participation needs to be developed with the people involved; no community partnership is represented as already agreed.
