Marine stewardship is part of the proposed learning experience, connecting the future of surfing with the health of the ocean.

Protect the breaks

MSI’s strategy proposes reef protection programmes and collaboration with marine biologists and conservation groups. These are opportunities to connect surf education with the ecosystems that sustain the sport, with specific projects and partners still to be confirmed.

Rethink surf materials

Sustainable board production, material science, reef-conscious surf products and environmentally responsible apparel form part of the proposed research agenda. The wider strategy also envisages testing innovative board designs and materials with MSI.

Build better surf tourism

Responsible surf schools, waste reduction at events and sustainable business practices are proposed elements of the curriculum. The aim is to make stewardship a practical part of how future coaches, operators and entrepreneurs work.

Understand the ocean

Wave dynamics, meteorology and forecasting connect the experience of surfing with scientific understanding. MSI aims to create research opportunities alongside practical training, subject to the development of appropriate academic and research relationships.

These are proposed education and research priorities. No environmental performance certification or completed conservation outcome is claimed.
